Testing of elite athletes
The reasons for testing an athlete are outlined below:
• To study the effect of a training programme;
• To motivate the athletes to train more;
• To give an athlete objective feedback;
• To make an athlete more aware of the aims of the training;
• To evaluate whether an athlete is ready to compete;
• To determine the performance level of an athlete; and

Periodisation programmes for training
Periodisation is defined as the “long-term cyclic structuring of training and practise to maximise performance to coincide with important competitions”. Simply, the periodisation of training programmes is the programme design strategy that governs planned, systematic variations in training specificity, intensity, and volume.
Periodisation addresses peak performance for competition or meets. Periodisation, if appropriately arranged, can peak the athlete multiple times over a competitive season or optimise an athlete’s performance over an entire competitive season.
An intelligently designed training year will encompass smaller blocks of time that each has its own goals or priorities. This type of overall schedule will encompass all of the aspects of the athlete’s programming and can include strength training, conditioning, plyometric, and sports-specific activities.
