Background

Hanlie Degenaar is a registered Speech-language therapist and Audiologist heading the Care2Kids division of the CHHP at NWU. She has a special interest in optimal neurodevelopmental outcomes for children by nurturing parent-child interaction, communication development and creativity through play, storytelling, and movement, regardless of their abilities and geographical or economic context. Her focus is developing sustainable, effective multi-disciplinary services to help challenged children and their families flourish.

As a clinician, supervisor, and consultant, she worked in educational, hospital, and private practice settings with people across cultural and language differences. Advanced training in feeding disorders, early communication intervention, neurodevelopmental therapy, Autism, play therapy, neuro-linguistic disorders, alternative and augmentative communication moulded her clinical and management skills. She enjoys presenting interactive workshops.

She is a project leader for community service projects, an organiser of the National Autism Symposium and a co-supervisor on research projects in psychology, engineering and social work.

Hanlie is a member of the South African Speech-language and Hearing Association, the South Africa Neurodevelopmental Therapy Association, the Zero to Three organisation (US), a certified member of The Hanen Centre (Canada) and an Advisory Board member of the South African Institute for Sensory Integration.
