PROMOTING SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL COMPETENCE IN YOUTH

Social-emotional competence refers to the ability of a person to understand and regulate emotions, with a good intrapersonal understanding and awareness. Social-emotional competence also includes interpersonal competencies such as empathy, having good relationships and adhering to civic responsibilities. Importantly, it also includes self-management skills such as impulse control, stress management, problem-solving and being realistic. Social-emotional competence can be a protective variable which can propel personal growth and development. This workshop will focus on:

  • An overview of social-emotional competence, including the intrapersonal, interpersonal and self-management competencies
  • Challenges faced by young persons
  • Practical techniques to enhance the social-emotional competence of young persons from about 14 to 18 years old.

The workshop will be conducted by Dr Mariette van der Merwe, social worker and senior lecturer at the Centre for Child, Youth and Family Studies, Faculty of Health Sciences, North-West University. Dr Van der Merwe works from the Wellington office. She has worked for various NGO’s and has been in private practice for many years where she focused on trauma, child and family interventions, divorce, social and emotional competence. She is author and co-author of scientific articles on diverse topics such as divorce, trauma, social capital and Conservation of Resources. She is an experienced workshop facilitator.
