NEUROSENSE PREMMIE PARENTING

NEUROSENSE PREMMIE PARENTING

Aim

To determine the acceptability, feasibility, and pilot impact of a parenting education intervention in the NICU setting.

Design

Implementation research study, which draws on qualitative and quantitative methods to address the research question posed.
Focus on both the process and the results of the implementation.

Phases

  • Systematic Literature Review
  • Exploration
  • Intervention Development
  • Pilot
    • Biographical Questionnaire
    • PSS (Parental Stress Scale)
    • KPIB (Knowledge of Preterm Infant Behaviour Scale)
    • Repeated after one week
    • Nursing Child Assessment Feeding Scale

Objectives

  • To review the literature to determine the key components of a parenting education intervention for the preterm-infant parent dyads in the NICU.
  • To explore parental needs and perceptions regarding a parenting education intervention delivered to them while in the NICU.
  • To review an existing South African developed parenting education intervention against the key components of such interventions for the preterm-infant parent dyads in the NICU as defined in literature as well as against parenting expectations.
  • To refine the South African parenting education intervention.
  • To determine the acceptability, feasibility and pilot impact on neonatal and parental outcomes of the parenting education intervention in selected NICUs.
    • (Secondary objective) To determine whether the parenting education intervention can change parental knowledge to influence their ability to critically appraise their preterm infant’s behaviour, respond in a supportive manner and as a result, decrease adverse parental outcomes.
    • To refine the parenting education intervention to ensure suitability for the South African context

Next steps – to integrate the program with the INDeSC program and scale-up to the rest of the country
