PRECEPTORSHIP FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

WHY IS THIS PROGRAM NEEDED?

Nurse graduates – need support when transitioning to RN role.
Registered nurses are not confident in their clinical teaching role
Implementation of Clinical Education Training Units (CETU) at public health facilities, requires trained preceptors to support nursing staff and nursing students during their placements.
Based on the needs of registered nurses and nurse graduates – developed a preceptorship programme in 2021.

PURPOSE

Health professionals to assume a role of clinical preceptors to health professional students and employees

 

OBJECTIVES

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the preceptor role
  • Apply principles of adult learning  within the context of preceptorship
  • Manage the preceptor-preceptee relationship
  • Monitor competence of the preceptee
  • Demonstrate clinical skills and knowledge to be an effective preceptor

 

COURSE CONTENT

  • 3 days face-to face workshop
  • 2 days presentations and activities (16 hrs) and 1-day practical day (8 hours)
  • Complete portfolio of evidence for 6 months with preceptee (3 days per week for 12 hrs)
  • Teaching methods: PowerPoint presentations, video analysis, group discussions and individual activities

Unit 1: Preceptorship and foundations of precepting
Unit 2: Communication and the learning process
Unit 3: Evaluator role of a preceptor
Unit 4: Facilitating role of a preceptor
Unit 5: Being the preceptor
