Research and training with the aim of obtaining this qualification in the Faculty of Health Sciences are structured in the School of Nursing Sciences and the research focus area NUMIQ (Quality in Nursing and Midwifery).Research and training in the various programmes indicated below take place under the guidance of the Director of the research focus area NUMIQ (Quality in Nursing and Midwifery), whilst lectured modules are managed by the School of Nursing Sciences and the staff of the different subject groups.
The degree can be conducted on a full-time and part-time basis.


Duration (minimum and maximum)
The minimum duration for the study is one year and the maximum duration two years, calculated from the date of first registration for the particular programme. 
The faculty’s decision is based on the current subsidy model for universities and may differ from other faculties or regulations.
Students who apply for an additional study year according to the Academic rules of the University, must note that it will have financial implications for them.

 

Minimum Requirements

Minimum requirements of the qualification

  • To qualify for admission to the Master of Nursing Science, a prospective student must be a professional nurse and be in possession of a four-year professional  degree  or  a  three-year  degree  with  relevant  honours  or postgraduate  diploma,  such  as  the  postgraduate  diploma  in  Nursing education,  or  an  equivalent qualification  that  exits  at  NQF  level  8,  as approved by Senate.
  • In addition, a prospective student must comply with all other requirements as prescribed in the General Academic rules of the NWU and the rules of the faculty of Health Sciences.
  • To be admitted to this programme, a student should have obtained at least 60% in the research methodology module of the bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification.

Additional requirements and faculty specific rules

  • Students, who want to practise as a nurse in South Africa, should provide proof of registration as a nurse at the South African Nursing Council.
  • To be admitted to any of the programmes/curricula, a student should have obtained at least 60% in the research methodology module of the B degree or equivalent qualification.
  • The director of NuMIQ and experts of the particular study field/programme will select candidates based on documents presented with application, after which information for writing an essay for evaluation of the candidate’s writing and arguing skills and other procedures as necessary will be communicated to the applicants.
