NWU Medical School

Shaping the future of medical education. Rooted in ubuntu. Powered by innovation.

The purpose of the Desmond Tutu School of Medicine is to train clinically competent, socially accountable doctors who can meet the health needs of the North West Province and South Africa, with a strong focus on underserved and rural communities. Rooted in the values of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the School aims to produce graduates who combine medical expertise with ethical leadership, critical thinking, resilience, and a deep commitment to social justice. Through an innovative, integrated curriculum and early, sustained community engagement, it aims to strengthen health systems, address health inequities, and contribute to universal health coverage and the National Health Insurance system, thereby creating doctors who can make a lasting impact both locally and globally.
