Prof du Plessis holds a BSc, BSc Hons (Physiology), MSc (Physiology) and PhD (Occupational Hygiene) degrees. He received a Y2 research rating from the National Research Foundation in 2014. His teaching-learning experience is in physiology, toxicology and occupational hygiene. To date he has supervised 30 Masters and PhD students and authored more than 30 papers published in accredited journals. His research focus and expertise is on exposure to chemical stressors in the workplace. This includes assessing the potential risk of exposure, assessing actual levels of exposure and controlling the level of exposure. Another research interest is regulatory toxicology, in particular occupational exposure limits.

Mrs du Preez is a researcher and lecturer in the field of Occupational Hygiene and is mainly focused on identifying the health risks associated with Additive Manufacturing (3D printing) processes undertaken at different facilities in South-Africa. Her research is also aimed at providing important information necessary for training employees on the health consequences of being exposed to the materials used in additive manufacturing and to deliver effective control measures. Mrs du Preez lectures undergraduate modules in Occupational Hygiene and is registered as an Occupational Hygiene Assistant with the Southern African Institute for Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH).

The main focus of Dr Linde's research is the assessment of total exposure to hazardous chemical substances that workers, in different industries, experience via all routes of exposure. These industries include mining and refining of chemicals, such as precious metals, and additive manufacturing. His teaching focuses on occupational hygiene and the methods used to measure chemical and physical stressors in the workplace, as well as other occupational hygiene subjects such as occupational toxicology and biological monitoring.

Prof Anja Franken’s research is focused on the in vitro skin permeation of platinum group metals and the different factors potentially influencing the skin permeability. Her focus has expanded to include the investigation of the skin as a barrier and workplace factors that may influence the effectiveness of this barrier. She is registered as an Occupational Hygiene Technologist with the Southern African Institute for Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH). Prof Franken lectures undergraduate modules in Occupational Hygiene and she is part of the team that has developed the first professional degree in Occupational Hygiene in South Africa (BHSc in Occupational Hygiene).

My main research focus is in occupational exposure of outdoor workers to solar ultraviolet radiation (SUVR). The primary aim of the research is to establish a baseline exposure dose of these workers to seeing that there is no occupational exposure limit in South Africa and very little work has been done in this regard. The secondary aim is to establish a database of the number of workers likely to be exposed, evaluate their knowledge of health effects associated with SUVR and effectiveness of the clothing provided or worn. In the longer term, I aim to widen my footprint through collaboratory projects with other national and international researchers in this field.
