Established in 2011, the Preclinical Drug Development Platform (PCDDP) operates as a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to advancing pharmaceutical innovation in South Africa. The PCDDP facility provides a comprehensive preclinical testing platform supporting the development of pharmaceutical drugs, vaccines, and phytomedicines for both local and international research institutions and industry partners.

The department is structured to fulfil two complementary functions: the delivery of specialised Preclinical research services and the provision of postgraduate academic training at Master’s and PhD levels. Through this dual role, the facility contributes to scientific excellence, capacity development, and the growth of a sustainable and competitive pharmaceutical sector.
