What is Consumer Sciences?

Consumer Sciences is a field of study that focuses on the wellbeing of consumers and their interaction with communities and the environment. It is a stimulating field of study that gives the opportunity to apply creativity to the advantage of the consumer on numerous levels.

The needs of the South African consumer are scientifically developed and researched. The programmes offered at Consumer Sciences are designed to study consumers’ behaviour within the fields of Fashion Retail Management and Food Product Management.

Consumer Scientists are employed by the consumer retail industry as consumer specialists to: i) enhance consumer products; ii) understand consumers’ behaviour; and iii) improve consumers’ well-being thereby making an important contribution to the South African economy and development. 

We offer three qualifications:
  • Three year Bachelor of Consumer Studies (8EF H01). This programme provide graduates with a well-rounded, broad education of food, fashion and consumer behaviour integrated with Nutrition, Business and Entrepreneurial modules.
  • Four year Bachelor of Consumer Sciences in Fashion Retail Management (8DT K03). This programme provide graduates with a specialised education of fashion retail management, consumer behaviour, consumer research methodology and conducting a fashion research project, integrated with Business and Communication modules.
  • Four year Bachelor of Consumer Sciences in Food Product Management (8DS K03). This programme provide graduates with a specialised education of food product management, nutrition, consumer behaviour, consumer research methodology and conducting a food research project, integrated with Business and Communication modules.
