Clinical Training Platform

A functional Medical School requires an appropriate clinical training platform that can ensure students experience a variety of diseases, procedures and technologies. Initially the clinical training platform will be within the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District of the North West and as the Medical School is established and progress, this platform can extend to other districts in the province. Within the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, the following platforms and facilities will be included:

Communities	In their first year of training, medical students will do home visits with Community Health Workers and gain experience of Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC). Students will learn about networks, learn about the social determinants of health and gain insight into the realities of ordinary citizens that need to access healthcare in the Province. Communities will be within the JB Marks Municipality.
Clinics	In their second year, students will gain experience at Primary Health Care clinics and Community Health Centres within the Tlokwe sub-districts, which will include Ventersdorp as well. In their sixth year, medical students will also do clinical rotations in clinics in the Matlosana- and Maquassie Hills sub-districts.
Potchefstroom Regional Hospital	In their third year, medical students will start to do clinical rotations at Potchefstroom Regional Hospital.
Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospital Complex	The K/T Complex in Klerksdorp serves as the tertiary hospital and dominant hospital for clinical rotations when students are in year 4, 5 and 6 of training.
Nic Bodenstein Hospital	When the students are in their final year, they will be allocated also to the Nic Bodenstein Hospital, a district hospital in Wolmaranstad and surrounding clinics.

Clinical placement of medical students will strengthen the DHS and students will experience Primary Health Care as the foundation of the health system and Family physicians within the DHS will actively contribute to the clinical training of the students. Medical students will be trained to understand the DHS and the promotive, preventive, curative, rehabilitative and palliative healthcare services in an accessible, affordable, equitable and integrated manner. There are 31 clinics and 10 community health centres (CHCs) where students can be placed based on the final curriculum in the North West province.
