My early research mainly focused on neurodegeneration and neuroprotection, Parkinson’s disease being my interest. Since the mid-1990s I focused on metabolic disorders and neurodegenerative diseases, linking inborn errors and induced metabolic diseases to neurodegeneration. Since my research shifted towards the study of omega-3 fatty acids and its role in epilepsy and peroxisomal and neurodegenerative disorders. and to biological testing using Sprague Dawley rats. We have established the adenosine radioligand binding assay in our laboratory and are currently focussing on drug design and the role of adenosine receptors and natural products in diabetes.
